Residential Course:

15-22 July & 22-29 July 2017

CAPTURING LIGHT

Fully inclusive, one or two week residential painting course involving plein air and studio painting, sight seeing and shopping.

This week will focus on how to represent the unique light of Provence, retaining the transparency and clarity of watercolour, and allowing the painting to shimmer and sparkle. You will be going out paiting in the villages and landscape around Les Bassacs and Paul will teach through a combination of demonstrations and individual help. He will take you through the processes of achieving the painting you want by starting with preliminary sketching pencil, thinking and planning ahead, blocking in shadows and values to quickly capture the light and building up detail with paint. Paul comments “I love the free-flowing paint effects and the way the pigment can be manipulated on paper with amazing energy”.

Where:

The Luberon region of Provence, around 45 mins NW of Avignon.

ONE DAY COURSES 2017

Day courses are held on Saturdays from 10am-4pm and cover different themes each year. Most of my courses are led by example, usually beginning with a demonstration and/or exercise work to give you inspiration and ideas for working on your own picture. There is always plenty of expert help and advice offered throughout the day. All day courses include complementary tea, coffee and biscuits.

COURSE 1:

8 April 2017, 10:00am-4:00pm. (WATERCOLOUR)

UNDER

PAINTING FOR WATER-

COLOUR

How and where do you begin with a watercolour painting? Just how much influence does a starting wash have on the upper colours of a picture? What happens if you use warm and cool colours underneath a painting and how do you achieve the most appropriate value to begin with? Through exercise work, you will gain an understanding of how important a starting wash is before watching an example of the working method in my demonstration painting. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to put your practice into your very own painting.

What to bring:

Please bring a packed lunch and your usual watercolour painting materials such as brushes, paints, pencils, palette, a pad or stretched/ loose sheets of paper and a water pot. You will also need to bring along a photograph or two to work from. This can be of any landscape scenario but for maximum impact try to use a picture that contains a good balance of strong and light values. Try to keep designs simple if you can as opposed to epic, detailed paintings

Where:

Coley Sunday School, Coley Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 7SA

Cost:

£45.00 on booking

COURSE 2:

20 May 2017, 10:00am-4:00pm. (WATERCOLOUR)

PAINTING REFLEC-TIONS

IN WATER

Watercolour is the perfect medium for painting reflections. Liven up your paintings by turning flat uninteresting water scenes into evocative paintings. In this workshop, you will learn how to use different methods for painting reflections by following my carefully guided exercises. You will then practice the invention of reflections in a simple flat water scene before watching a demonstration painting involving the same. After, you will create your own painting, putting your newly found skills to full use with my guidance and assistance

What to bring:

Please bring a packed lunch and your usual watercolour painting materials such as brushes, paints, pencils, palette, a pad or stretched/ loose sheets of paper and a water pot. You will also need to bring along a photograph or two to work from that include still water. This could be a lake, river, pond, canal etc, and the reflections don't necessarily need to be evident.

Where:

Coley Sunday School, Coley Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 7SA

Cost:

£45.00 on booking

COURSE 3:

12 Aug 2017, 10:00am-4:00pm. (ACRYLIC)

BLENDING WITH ACRYLIC

Acrylic paint combines the workings of watercolour with a similar look to oil paint, but it's fast drying can often lead to a hard edged finish, making work look frustratingly contrived. In this workshop you will learn some important techniques for proper blending of colour, how to blend values as well as over-layering for visual, transparent blends. After watching my demonstration painting you will be ready to embark on achieving successful blends in your own work throughout the afternoon.

What to bring:

Please bring a packed lunch and acrylic painting materials, which consist of acrylic brushes, paints, palette or plate, a surface to work on such as board, canvas or watercolour paper, a water pot and either some Winsor Newton Flow Improver, slow dry medium or matt medium. You will also need to bring along newspaper or a table cover, an old shirt or apron, table easel only if desired (not necessary) and a photograph or two to work from.

Where:

Coley Sunday School, Coley Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 7SA

Cost:

£45.00 on booking

COURSE 4:

14 Oct 2017, 10:00am-4:00pm. (WATERCOLOUR)

WATER-COLOUR BLEEDS

Forget traditional watercolour, enter the world of expression and the modern ways of painting. Watercolour is such an expressive and immediate medium to use and the way the colour runs and bleeds is incredibly evocative. In this workshop you will learn how to make watercolour bleed and blend to create exciting and imaginative effects in your work. After working through some guided exercises and watching my demonstration painting you will have the opportunity to try out the exciting effects in your own picture.

What to bring:

Please bring a packed lunch and your usual watercolour painting materials such as brushes, paints, pencils, palette, a pad or stretched/ loose sheets of paper and a water pot. You will also need to bring along a small water spray bottle and a photograph or two to work from. When selecting a reference image, consider where you might wish to utilise soft shapes and/or paint runs.

Where:

Coley Sunday School, Coley Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 7SA

Cost:

£45.00 on booking

COURSE 5:

25 Nov 2017, 10:00am-4:00pm. (WATERCOLOUR)

BREAKING RULES IN WATER-COLOUR

The traditional painters of yesterday would have you sticking to rigid rules but rules stifle creativity and somehow these have continued into today's world of painting. In this workshop you will be given permission and inspiration to rid yourself of these anchors. For instance, should you really  apply your paint carefully from side to side? How to use white paint in your colours, working from dark to light (not always light to dark) and how and when to use black paint. When you put these rules and more into the history books, your painting will take on a new look.

What to bring:

Please bring a packed lunch and your usual watercolour painting materials such as brushes, paints, pencils, palette, a pad or stretched/ loose sheets of paper and a water pot. You will also need to bring along white gouache plus any other gouache colours you may have (not essential), black or neutral tint plus a photograph or two to work from that includes strong contrast.

Where:

Coley Sunday School, Coley Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 7SA

Cost:

RESIDENTIAL COURSES 2017

COURSE 9:

13-14  May 2017

10:00am-4:00pm each day

PAINTING THE MOMENT

Two-day courses are held on location over a weekend, and usually in a picturesque village where there are good amenities, accommodation and beautiful scenery. Whatever the location I always ensure that we have full use of a village hall. In some circumstances I endeavour to work on location and if this is the case I try to minimise the amount of travel or walking required. The price for a two-day course does not include accommodation or meals which leaves you free to choose where you stay. Non painting partners are most welcome.

What to bring:

A list of what to bring plus some suggested accommodation details along with further information will be sent to you at the time of booking.

Where:

A weekend painting in the beautiful village of Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales. Set on the edge of the River Wharfe, Burnsall is a delight for the painter, with its large riverside green, vernacular architecture, distant views of Wharfedale, the five arch Burnsall Bridge and spectacular river scenery.

Burnsall Village Hall, Main Street, Burnsall, N.Yorkshire, BD23 6BP

Cost:

£100.00 in full, or 2 payments of £55.00 deposit (on booking) and £50.00 balance (on 14/04/17).

CREATE SOFT EDGES IN ACRYLIC LANDSCAPES

Acrylic dries fast, which can lead to many unwanted hard edges in your pictures. These can be contrasted with harder edges and thicker, opaque applications later on in the painting. Using FW Artists’ Acrylic Inks to create flow, you will be shown techniques to first generate softly blended colours, before
