Painting Courses

I teach painting to my own organised groups and classes in West Yorkshire as well as to art groups and other organisations around the UK. My courses are well structured, planned and pitched at an achievable level for most painters.

My Ten-Week Courses weave themes throughout the coursework and are complemented with illustrated notes, homework sessions and appraisals. Every year is different so you can enjoy returning again and again.

One-Day Courses are more intensive studies of a particular topic or theme, generally led with a demonstration and exercise work.

Residential Courses give you a chance to absorb an area, seek out subjects and create paintings with my instructions, guidance and demonstrations.

Besides my own courses, there are usually Other Courses organised by art societies and businesses that are open for booking too.

Please note that I kindly request, all paintings and exercises are subject to copyright and must not be sold or passed off as your own work.

My natural teaching ability is frequently complemented, especially amongst teaching professionals and academics. I gain a huge amount of satisfaction from teaching people how to improve. Many of my students have gone on to become professional and semi-professional artists, winning competition prizes and holding solo exhibitions.

ONE DAY COURSES 2018

Day courses are held on Saturdays from 10am-4pm and cover different themes each year. Most of my courses are led by example, usually beginning with a demonstration and/or exercise work to give you inspiration and ideas for working on your own picture. There is always plenty of expert help and advice offered throughout the day. All day courses include complementary tea, coffee and biscuits.

COURSE 1

Sat 17 March 2018, 10:00am-4:00pm. (WATERCOLOUR)

CONNECTING SHAPES AND SIMPLIFICATION

Create better paintings that involve more imaginative effects by allowing shapes to fuse and blend. In this workshop you will be encouraged to paint only the defining parts of features, allowing the rest to connect, fuse and 'paint themselves'. This technique will simplify your work and lessen the amount of detail you might ordinarily feel the need to paint. The workshop will engage you via group discussion and exercise work before watching my demonstration painting. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to put the ideas into your very own painting.

What to bring:

Please bring a packed lunch and your usual watercolour painting materials such as brushes, paints, pencils, palette, a pad or stretched/ loose sheets of paper and a water pot. You will also need to bring along a photograph or two to work from. Try to choose pictures that involve a number of features/shapes that can be interconnected with paint.

You will be led through some exercise and colour theory work before gaining inspiration from my demonstration painting. Throughout the remainder of the session you will have the opportunity to put the information to the test as you tackle your own greens painting.

You may also find one or more of the following colours useful: Sap Green, Hooker's Green, Viridian. You will also need to bring along a photograph or two to work from. RESIDENTIAL COURSES 2018

COURSE 9

8-9  September 2018, 10:00am-4:00pm each day

PAINTING THE MOMENT

Two-day courses are held on location over a weekend, and usually in a picturesque village where there are good amenities, accommodation and beautiful scenery. Whatever the location I always ensure that we have full use of a village hall. In some circumstances I endeavour to work on location and if this is the case I try to minimise the amount of travel or walking required. The price for a two-day course does not include accommodation or meals which leaves you free to choose where you stay. Non painting partners are most welcome.

What to bring:

A list of what to bring plus some suggested accommodation details along with further information will be sent to you at the time of booking.

Where:

A weekend painting in the beautiful village of Linton in the Yorkshire Dales. Set on an idyllic village green, at the head of which lies the Fountaine Hospital, a Grade II listed Palladian style almhouse that was built by Richard Fountaine to provide shelter to the village's poor. Linton beck can be crossed by two bridges, both of which make fantastic focal points to paintings.
